A phobia is described as an extreme irrational fear or aversion to something which can be: a place, a person, an object, an animal a situation or a feeling. It can result in a relentless feeling of dread and can become extremely debilitating and restrictive as you employ a variety of avoidance tactics in your day to day life. A phobia is a form of anxiety and like any form of anxiety triggers the fight or flight response in you when you are exposed to, or sometimes even merely think about, the source of your fear. Symptoms you will experience are similar to that of any anxiety attack and include: palpitations, nausea, sweating, dizziness, shaking, stomach upsets and shortness of breath. As humans we are born with only two fears, loud noises and falling. All other fears and phobias are learned behaviours. Common phobias include: spiders, wasps, flying, fear of open spaces, fear of enclosed spaces and social phobia.
